Background
Ali Dastmalchian is Professor of Organization Studies at the Gustavson School of Business. He served as Dean of the Gustavson School from 2002 to 2012. His academic career spans over three decades and he has over 20 years of experience as Dean and Director/Chair at four Canadian universities. He served as Chair and Vice-Chair of the Canadian Federation of Business School Deans (CFBSD). He has also taught and has done research at universities in Wales, England, Australia, Denmark, France, Austria, Turkey, Taiwan and Malaysia. Ali obtained his MSc in Management and Technology and PhD in Organization Theory from Cardiff Business School, Cardiff University in Wales and his BSc in Economics & Political Science from the National University of Iran. Ali has a number of years of management experience and has assisted organizations in Europe, North America, Middle East, and Asia.
When Dean, Ali was involved in EFMD and AACSB, led the Gustavson School of Business in achieving AACCB and EQUIS accreditations and is currently on the AACSB’s Initial Accreditation Committee (IAC). Ali has been on AACSB’s and EQUIS’ Peer Review teams and has chaired a number of EQUIS peer reviews internationally (Canada, Australia, UK, France, Portugal, Finland, Switzerland, Hong Kong and Brazil).
Ali has significant international experience in terms of program development in Europe, Asia, Middle East, North Africa and Latin America and has helped design and implement many innovative international programs globally.
He is on the Board of Directors and is the VP of Practice of the GLOBE research project -–a major research project on leadership and culture in 62 countries. His work has been published in over 100 journals, books, book chapters and proceedings. He has received over 15 major competitive research grants from national granting agencies such as Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) and Canadian Health Services Research Foundation (CHSRF).
Professor Dastmalchian is an award-winning teacher and facilitator who has taught at undergraduate and graduate levels and in executive development programs. He has also been active as consultant assisting organizations and leaders around the globe. In addition to consulting, Ali has participated in executive development programs in North America and globally. He has worked with organizations in public, private, co-operative and non-profit sectors.
