Expertise
- Microfinance – supply of financial services to individual entrepreneurs and small businesses, which lack access to traditional methods
- Base of the Pyramid
- Less-developed countries
Background
Joshua Ault’s research examines the challenges to conducting business in the world’s poorest countries. He is interested in both the financial and social impact of business ventures in this context. His current projects examine trends in the global growth of the microfinance lending, one of the few business models to successfully penetrate these markets on a large scale. His objective is to extend findings from microfinance to other industries that could potentially provide essential goods and services to the poor in less-developed countries.
Prior to pursuing his PhD, Joshua worked for a global transportation and supply-chain-management company.

For assistant professor Dr. Joshua Ault, research is much more than collecting and crunching data from anonymous subjects. The faculty research chair of the Centre for Social and Sustainable Innovation, Ault models Gustavson’s philosophy by bringing sustainability and social responsibility into his classroom.
In one of Gustavson’s international business courses, Ault aligns his expertise in microfinance with his belief in service to examine how real people manage in real situations. Read more about his approach in our Research@Gustavson newsletter.
