- Dr. Ana Maria Peredo receives 2013 Craigdarroch Award for Excellence in Knowledge Mobilization
Our own Dr. Ana Maria Peredo is the recipient of the 2013 Craigdarroch Award for Excellence in Knowledge Mobilization. Dr. Peredo was presented with the award at a University Club ceremony May 2. It was presented to her by Chancellor Murray Farmer and Dean Saul Klein.

- UVic Honours Brandt Louie as Distinguished Entrepreneur
Brandt Louie, chairman and CEO of H.Y. Louie Co. Ltd. and chairman of the board of London Drugs, has been honoured with UVic’s Gustavson School of Business Distinguished Entrepreneur of the Year Award (DEYA) for 2013. This is the 10th year for the awards.

UVic has appointed Dr. A. R. (Elango) Elangovan, a University of Victoria Distinguished Professor. This distinction is the highest academic honour UVic can bestow on a faculty member. The designation was created to highlight remarkable achievement by a faculty member in both teaching and scholarly research. Fellow faculty member and student comments are taken into consideration when assessing the teaching abilities of distinguished professors, while research must be recognized in the international academic community as being of exceptionally high calibre.
“Elango fits this description perfectly,” says dean Saul Klein “this latest accolade is a wonderful tribute to the extraordinary contributions that he has made to UVic.”

Some fresh business brains with an international focus are now offering their best counsel to the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business at the University of Victoria.
This new advisory body is chaired by Matthew Hall, a former CEO of food giant Nestle, currently with London-based consulting firm GoodBrand, and Executive-in-Residence at Gustavson.

- Congratulations to the winning KPMG Business Simulation team!
Congratulations to Devan Chiappetta McCannel, Winnie Tam, Taylor Norman and Callum Maclean, winners of the 2013 KPMG Business Simulation. At the end of the first year of core subjects the simulation gives students the opportunity to see how their learning is integrated into business decisions. Decisions in marketing, operations, human resources, and finance are reflected in their companies’ financial reports. As students move from year to year they get better and better at understanding how one change can impact all areas of business operations. Gustavson is extremely fortunate to have a partner like KPMG sponsor this simulation that brings our first year in business to an end and sets the students up for a very successful second year.

- BCom student set to compete at the Nicol Entrepreneurial Awards
On March 26, 2013, fourth year BCOM student Brendan Harris will compete with contestants from universities across the country at the the Nicol Entrepreneurial Awards. Harris was the overall winner of the Planit! Competition held on campus earlier this month, securing the $5000 first prize winnings and the opportunity to represent UVic at the Nicol awards. Harris’ venture is called Portis Tech Solutions. It is a custom web-based operations software platform developed for the ship maintenance industry. It uses a three step program to streamline the complex process of ship refurbishing which results in reductions in human error, waste, overlap and gap. As one of the six Nicol finalists, Harris will present his business plan in Ottawa to a panel of seven judges. The overall winner will be announced the evening of March 26 at an awards gala. - How to Make a Profit in Ten Days
The Gustavson School has a surprise in store for the fourth-year undergraduates enrolled in its three-month immersion entrepreneurship specialization. In the last tem minutes of the first-day orientation, faculty give students this directive: "You've got ten days - go out and make as much money as you can. Then come back and tell us how it went." That's the premise of the Peter Thomas Innovation Projects, which kicks off the students' semester.
"Students are often shocked," says J. Brock Smith, professor of marketing and entrepreneurship and director of the Innovation Project. "Some rise to the challenge, sone don't. But they all learn something from it."

Dr. Ana María Peredo, CCCBE Director and Professor at Gustavson School of Business, has been awarded the 2013 University of Victoria Community Leadership Award. This nomination recognizes Dr. Peredo’s exemplary leadership in linking the University and the community. Through her teaching, her research and her leadership Dr. Peredo has created opportunities for graduate and undergraduate students, to help community organizations. She works tirelessly to bring people from different disciplines, sectors and communities together to share wisdom and knowledge. The Victoria Leadership Awards ceremony were held on February 25th. Dr. Saul Klein has been appointed the new dean of the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business at the University of Victoria.
Klein is currently the Lansdowne Professor of International Business at the school, which he joined in 2001. He has been the champion of the international business area since 2002 and the director of executive programs since 2004.

The University of Victoria has placed 11th in the world and first in Canada among universities under 50 years of age in the Times Higher Education’s 100-under-50 rankings.
A university’s standing was determined by13 objective performance indicators including research, citations (research influence), teaching, international outlook and industry income.

The University of Victoria, through the Gustavson School of Business, has signed agreements to work with the new government of the Republic of Tunisia to help develop its administrative capacity and to promote academic collaboration and exchange.
The agreements support reform of Tunisia’s higher education system, the exchange of administrative best practices, the exchange of scholars and researchers, and the development and delivery of training programs in leadership and governance.

More students will be able to earn their bachelor of commerce degree from the University of Victoria, thanks to continued growth at the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business. Up to 60 more students will be admitted beginning September 2012 to year one, increasing the capacity of the program by 25 per cent to 300 students per year from 240.
