Ranging from a two day course to an 18 day long certificate program, technical and people skills, we have something to offer all project management resources.
About this seminar
The Introduction to Project Management course is designed for people who want to maximize their time and increase their return on investment.
This two-day introductory course gives new project managers and project team members the essential tools they need to deliver successful projects on time, on budget and in scope. The course covers the complete project lifecycle, from initial project proposal and definition, through project implementation, and finally to the often neglected project completion phase.

There are small, focused, discussion groups that will challenge you, non-traditional assignments that will cause you to question your preconceptions, and plenty of experiential learning.
You will participate in class activities, and not just "note-take." In fact, we've made the notes for you: you'll receive a detailed manual to take home.

“I have been managing projects at the Royal BC Museum for the past 12 years. I took the UVic Business Masters Certificate in Project Management course to enhance my project management skills and to take on larger and more complex projects. With the course, my knowledge base in PM expanded so far that I was able to write and pass my PMP before the last session. I highly recommend this course to current and future project managers.”
—Barry Forrester, PMP
Trades and Exhibits Manager
Royal BC Museum
“Thank you very much for offering the Masters Certificate in Project Management through UVic Business. I have been managing web development projects since the mid-nineties, and I found that this program was a tremendous boost to my existing knowledge and skills.
One of the critical factors, I believe, is that many of the highly qualified instructors were not from the IT sector. It was extremely helpful to approach many of the project management knowledge areas from a variety of industries instead of relating to IT-only examples. This perspective really helped me get my head around the different practices, and learn how to apply them to my specific needs.
I came out of this program with a lot of value in both training material and insight to project management. I felt that this was one of the most valuable professional development programs I have attended to date.”
Sage Internet Solutions Ltd.
“The Masters Certificate in Project Management has provided me with:
- a useful set of reference materials—I use the many binders regularly as hands-on help
- a great network of people to bounce ideas or problems off
- preparing for the PMI exam
- corporate recognition—once I had successfully completed the program and my PMI® certification I joined our corporate project management—this was a promotion for me”
—Sam Van Der Merwe, PMP
“Project management will benefit all organizations by providing a structured platform for ensuring value and corporate strategies are achieved consistently throughout the organization.
The Masters Certificate in Project Management has benefited me and the organization I work within by enabling clearly defining project scope and deliverables using tools such as the business case to provide clear understanding of project impacts and benefits and alignment to the organization’s strategic goals.
The project management framework learned through the UVic Business MCPM also provided the knowledge to become proficient in evaluating and controlling projects, clarifying roles and responsibilities for project sponsors, project managers, project team members and other stakeholders, setting expectations, improving risk management and most importantly ensuring the correct beginning for planning and project initiation.”
Oil and Gas Commission
“The Masters Certificate in Project Management was extremely well presented by seasoned facilitators with extensive project management expertise, particularly in the knowledge areas they presented. It provided me with a firm foundation to go one step further and subsequently achieve my PMP® designation.
I now view projects from a much more disciplined perspective, recognizing the benefits of approaching them from the PMBOK framework. Although not in the job market at present, I have noticed a number of key position postings which either require, or will give special consideration to, candidates to have the MCPMP and/or PMP® designations.
'Life is a project,' and the UVic Business program really helped me to view projects objectively and methodically and to apply the principals of project management, as the project requires. I thoroughly enjoyed it.”
—Marie Sturman, PMP
“My clients and project sponsors understand the importance of getting things done right the first time and are willing to use the concepts learned in your courses. People have asked me to put on a quick project management overview for their work sections. It is great to see how they recognize you as an expert!
The training has brought all the previous 'ad hoc' jumbled project management processes learned on the job to a coherent framework that can be used no matter what the size or complexity of the project.
The course reference material, the suggested web pages, and other documentation form unlimited source material to draw upon to make your project successful. An incredible foundation to grow your PM skills!”
Ministry of Forests, Government of BC
“As a participant in the Master Certificate in Project Management I found it to be very valuable in enhancing my project management skills. Like many long time project managers, I never had formal training. Although I was successful with the many projects I was involved in throughout my career, this program was a great help with time savings and organization. I am now in the process of starting a new design and manufacturing company where I will be incorporating many of the processes I became aware of during the course.”
—Rod J. Rees
Strategic Power Solutions
“I took the Masters Certificate in Project Management program to improve my own project management skills, but the course went beyond my expectations and gave me the tools and techniques I needed to introduce project management to my organization. The experienced instructors provided a multitude of relevant examples and the exercises prepared me for actually practicing good project management. As I build our PMO, I find the greatest depth of understanding comes from those who have formal project management education such as the MCPM program.”
—Nav Bassi, PMP
Manager, Project Management Office
UVic Computing and Systems Services
“A very well-balanced program; assigned readings, teaching modules, instructor's notes, assignments and simulation exercises reinforced and complemented each other. Both instructors and students came from a broad range of project management backgrounds (construction, engineering, business, IT, etc.). This resulted in very stimulating discussions, examples and comments. Well done! I feel much better prepared to both manage projects, and write the PMP certification exam.”
Data Manager, BC Conservation Data Centre
Ministry of Environment
“The Masters Certificate in Project Management provided me with a wealth of practical tools and techniques that can be applied to any project. Moreover, the course is designed to provide a very realistic experience of the issues that a manager can—and will—encounter in a typical project.”
—Malcolm Hyndman, PMP
Senior Advisor, Mergers & Acquisitions
TELUS Communications Inc.
“The Masters Certificate in Project Management has provided me with enhanced tools for my project management toolbox. The shift (in my workplace) to governance-based delivery models as well as implementation of ISO 9001:2000 provides challenges as well as opportunities, all requiring continuous improvement life cycles. In each of the courses the trainers provided tools and techniques on how to ‘manage’ these and other shifts in the corporate culture.
The MCPM training provides more than just the foundation to project management; it prepared me for the PMP certification. The program is delivered from ‘operational, seasoned and knowledgeable professionals’ that showcased real life lessons learned. For those of you considering challenging the PMP® certification exam, you will be doing yourself a favor from the advanced training of this MCPM program.”
—Ron C. Johnson, PMP

Shared Services BC Workplace Technology Services
Ministry of Labour and Citizen's Services
“The MCPM program is fabulous! It provides tools, techniques, and experience that will clearly enhance my abilities going forward as a project manager. I particularly liked the simulation that runs throughout the duration of the course: it cements the learning by applying the concepts immediately, and then it knits all the pieces together to form a systematic approach that I can apply to all future projects.”
—Joanne Charlton, PMP
Project Manager, Facilities
QuestAir Technologies Inc.
“I want to take this opportunity to thank you for all your support and your help during the course on project management. The course has been managed exceptionally well, efficiently and effectively. There is no doubt the information available on the program from the University of Victoria is good, but the material is really only as good as the people that stand behind it. You are to be commended for your dedication to the program and if asked, I shall have no difficulty whatsoever in recommending the program at the University of Victoria.”
—Ken Evans, PMP
“On behalf of our team I would like to express our appreciation for all of your efforts that contributed to the flawless delivery of the program. I know much was done in the background to accomplish this and it was so unobtrusive as to be hardly noticed—a clear sign of professionalism and competency.
It was a great experience for our team and if there was a fun award we would have aced that one. I am actually feeling a sense of loss at not being able to meet again with them .I think this is a clear sign of a meaningful and memorable journey far surpassing just the delivery of the nuts and bolts of project management.
I am so glad I enrolled in this one rather than one with a significant online component. The value of being together and learning with and from the other participants is priceless.”
Manager, Computer Services
“I would not hesitate to recommend this course to anyone interested in furthering their education and experience in project management. It is by far the finest course I have taken in 30 years in information technology and information management training. While individual courses in project quality assurance, risk management, procurement, project costing, and project management methodologies are useful; this course puts it all together. You gain an appreciation of the interconnectedness of the disciplines, and their impact on project performance.
The facilities were first rate; the instructors were knowledgeable professionals and excellent facilitators. Each one brought something extraordinary to the individual modules. I shall never forget the catalogue memory of John McIlroy or Bryan Walton's treatise on organizational change. Our particular class was largely filled with very intelligent students who were there to learn. The project simulation put it all to the test and it all came together. And, it was fun!
My particular project team was perhaps too dedicated to the competition. Probably, we worked too hard and broke the rules on the amount of time one should devote to the course. In short, we believed you when you said, "You get out of the course, what you put into it." I got a lot out of this course!”
Director, Information Systems Branch
Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Fisheries
