Pathways to Success - Graduate Student Professional Development Summit

The annual summit is offered to the graduate student community as a forum to share ideas and develop skills in support of academic and career success.

The Learning and Teaching Centre offers teaching assistant (TA) and graduate student professional development programs. Choose from a range of training and professional development options to help you prepare for a role as future faculty. Visit the LTC website and check out their newsletter for more program and workshop information. 

Assistantships

You can apply through your academic unit for paid employment as a teaching assistant (TA), research assistant (RA), scientific assistant, or laboratory instructor. TA employment is through your academic unit, not through the Faculty of Graduate Studies, at rates of pay determined by the university. As a TA, you are covered by a collective agreement between CUPE local 4163 and UVic.

Individual faculty members with external research grants might employ you as an RA. The details of these appointments (salary, hours, etc.) are worked out between you and the faculty member.

Contact the graduate adviser in your academic unit and proposed supervisor for information about TA and RA positions. Get useful information for TAs through the Learning and Teaching Centre.

If you are appointed as a TA or RA, you may also be recommended by your academic unit for an academic income supplement (AIS) from Graduate Studies.

Work study

UVic's work study program provides on-campus work experience for students demonstrating financial need. The number of positions available is limited so there is no guarantee of job placement if you are qualified to participate in the program.

Whether you're a new student, a current student in search of professional development resources or an alumni looking to stay connected, Student Transition Services is a place to check out. 

Student Transition Services hosts a wide range of on-campus events - from orientation programs that introduce you to campus to workshops that prepare you for that "next step" when your time at UVic is through.

  • Learn about what it takes to work abroad
  • Learn what it takes to work in Canada
  • Find out what you can do with your degree

UVic's PD-PUT program provides graduate students with certification for participating in a sequence of workshops, practica, and teaching activities including hands-on preparation for post degree job seeking. The program also guides the production of a teaching dossier that will make you stand out from other job applicants.
