Our passion inspires
Students learn best if they feel a sense of community in their classes, and if they feel what they're learning has practical applications to their lives. Students actively participate in my classes, and feel a personal connection to the course and the material.
Award-winning Psychology professor Dr. Martin Smith is developing innovative ways of increasing student engagement in university classes.
The art of teaching to classes like Psychology 100 brings major challenges like the diversity of the students (from engineering students to psychology majors) and the technological expectations of the modern student who wants "a quick, well-produced presentation, not just a talking head," he says.
In a typically fast-paced lecture, Smith will combine computer presentations with video clips and class discussions that will see him move up and down the aisles. He also does his best to put names to the crowd by asking students to provide digital photos for him to memorize.
UVic faculty like Martin Smith are passionate about the topics they teach and the research they undertake. Take our virtual tour to learn more about classroom experiences at UVic.
