Career options
Our graduate alumni have exciting careers ranging from academic research to artificial intelligence. You'll find them in academic positions around the world or working in leading industry companies.
Academic careers
UVic engineering alumni and signal processing expert Dr. Michael McGuire is working on the technical challenges of pinpointing cell phones indoors, which would extend location-based services that are already starting to proliferate for iPhones and Blackberries.
McGuire is an Assistant Professor with the Digital Signal Processing Group in the Department of Electrical and Computing Engineering. McGuire, who did his PhD at the University of Toronto (designing algorithms to overcome blocked GPS signals), says he was drawn back to UVic because ECE was so "quick out of the gate" to tie together research in signal processing and new communication systems.
Careers in industry
Caedmon Somers obtained his MASc from the Department of Electrical Engineering Laboratory for Parallel and Intelligent Systems. He now works in the video games industry using advanced artificial techniques to help bring characters to life. Caedmon developed adaptive AI techniques now used in Electronic Arts NHL series of games. He currently works at id Software, makers of the popular DOOM and Quake titles, developing AI for their new game RAGE.
Technology on Vancouver Island
UVic engineers and computer scientists are helping to build a new economy on Vancouver Island. The region's high-tech sector generates annual revenues of $1.7 billion, greatly strengthening the region's economic diversity.
The Faculty of Engineering educates many of the highly-qualified personnel critical to the sector's growth. Local growth of the high-tech sector has outpaced the provincial average. Greater Victoria is the second-largest technology sector in BC and technology is the #1 private industry in Greater Victoria.
