iron ring

The wearing of an iron ring is a long-standing engineering tradition. Iron rings are given to graduating engineers in the ceremony The Ritual of the Calling of an Engineer. The ring is a symbol that reflects the moral, ethical and professional commitment made by the engineer who wears it.

Obtaining the ring is optional; the ring is not a prerequisite for practicing professional engineering in Canada. The iron ring ritual is not connected to UVic but is administered by The Corporation of the Seven Wardens/Societe des Sept Gardiens inc., an independent body.

For more information about the iron ring ceremony held at UVic, contact Dr. James Provan.
