About us

McPherson LibraryFaculty of Education

Our vision

Our aim is to provide students with the knowledge and skills they need to become leaders in the classroom and in their communities.

Studies in education lead students toward an understanding of the nature of knowledge, its interpretations, and how it's shared. Through instruction and supervised experiences in the field, students are able to develop their professional knowledge and skills as well as their ability to share their own knowledge and experience.

Location and facilities

MacLaurin BuildingOur department is located in the MacLaurin Building (MAC). The UVic Curriculum Library in the MacLaurin Building contains more than 30,000 teaching tools and multi-media resources for creating lesson plans. Additionally, the MacLaurin Building houses the Technology integration and evaluation (TIE) research lab. The TIE lab provides state-of-the-art infrastructure for systematically researching optimal e-learning conditions, tools, processes and products.

We also feature one of the most popular undergraduate courses at UVic: Learning Strategies for University Success (ED-D 101), which has been helping students of all faculties learn how to better prepare for exams, understand assignments, and read strategically.

Chair's message

Dr. Johnd Anderson, ChairThe Department of Educational Psychology and Leadership Studies invites you to consider our graduate programs in educational psychology, counselling psychology and leadership studies at the masters and doctoral levels.  In addition we offer undergraduate certificate and diploma programs in special education and a graduate certificate in learning and teaching in higher education.

Our programs are aimed at professionals who want to enhance their knowledge and understandings to improve practice, and at individuals who intend to become researchers.  Our programs offer courses in a variety of formats – both on-campus and on-line – with a focus on integrating theory with real-world practice.  Small class sizes ensure a rich, personalized learning experience.  Students may study full-time or part-time.

Faculty members are active researchers in their fields of interest.  They publish their work widely and their research is supported by national and international funding bodies.  They are active members of their research community – for example the presidents of the Canadian Association of Educational Psychology and the Canadian Association for the Study of Women in Education are members of EPLS.  This rich base of knowledge, expertise and experience is brought to the classroom and offers graduate students opportunities to engage actively in research and study the research literature within areas of professional interest.
