Indigenous student support

Indigenous support

Indigenous Education Canoe Launch in 2010.

Let's face it, coming to university can often feel like moving to a foreign country for many students. In Indigenous Education, we understand how intimidating it can be to move from a treasured community to an unfamiliar and often larger new city and campus.

Indigenous Education in the Faculty of Education is a home away from home for our First Nations, Métis and Inuit relatives. Whether you've travelled across the country or just across town, there's one thing you can count on from us: our support in your educational journey.

Born, raised and educated in his homeland of Saanich, Indigenous Education adviser Nick "Xumthoult" Claxton knows first hand what it's like to be a student at UVic.

Nick chose the University of Victoria to complete both his undergraduate degree in psychology and his graduate degree in Indigenous Governance. We're glad he decided to stay around and work in a place that's like a second home to him.

"I really find it rewarding to assist current and future students and see them achieve their own particular educational goals. I also believe that strengthening the relationships between Indigenous communities and the university benefits everyone."

Nick encourages you to drop by anytime for information, advice or just a friendly chat. Come and find out the many things Indigenous Education at UVic has to offer.
