Gain hands-on experience through the co-operative education program.

The Bachelor of Arts in Recreation and Health Education Co-operative Education program is an interdisciplinary program that prepares you to enter the fields of recreation, wellness and health promotion, leadership and administration. This degree is an excellent foundation to work in the public and not for profit sectors as it prepares graduates with a foundation that supports social change. Course work focuses on planning, implementing, evaluating and supervising recreation, leisure, fitness, wellness and health promotion programs, services and policies. Your learning is enhanced through involvement in cooperative education experiences. You can find more specific information about co-operative education on the EPHE Co-operative Education and Career Services webpage and on the Co-operative Education and Career Services website.

New students enter the Faculties of Humanities, Social Science or Science in Year One, take associated prerequisite courses (see Year 1) and apply by January 31 of their first year to transfer into the Faculty of Education, Recreation & Health Education program for their second year.

Applications will be considered from those who have at least 12 units of university credit including:

  • 3 units of English (ENGL 135 and one of 146 or 147);
  • EPHE 143;
  • a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 4.0 (on a 9-point scale) on the most recent session. For students currently registered in less than 12 units the GPA will be determined by using a combination of the GPA achieved in the current session and the GPA from the previous session applied to the number of units required to reach 12 units. Achieving the minimum GPA for the program does not ensure acceptance.

All requirements for admission must be completed by April 30 and documented by May 31.

The following is the list of currently required courses you will take for the BA Recreation and Health Education Co-operative Education program as outlined in Section 17.2.1 of the UVic Calendar.  Others complete the requirements prevailing at time of entrance to the program (contact the EPHE Adviser).

Note 1

Of the 18.0 units of electives in the program, normally 7.5 units must be approved 300 or 400 level and be outside the Faculty of Education. As an option, 1.5 units of the 7.5 units may be taken within the Faculty of Education (e.g., 1.5 units may be selected from 300-400 level courses offered by the School of Exercise Science, Physical and Health Education or another Faculty of Education department/school). You MUST have the appropriate prerequisites to take any of these elective courses. If you are taking a transfer course via distance, be sure that the courses transfer at a 3rd or 4th year level.

Note 2

ADMN courses refer to the distance education courses offered through the School of Public Administration. Some courses require attendance at workshops, others are completed through on-line education. Administration courses are not usually listed in the Course Schedule.  You cannot register in your required ADMN electives yourself. You need to contact the School of Public Administration directly. You should email the School’s program manager, Heather Kirkham (hkirkham@uvic.ca). Heather will register you in your preferred course(s) if there are places available. You will need to provide Heather with your name, student number, as well as and the course numbers you wish to register in.

Note 3

EPHE 454 must be taken during the last year on campus and after completion of at least two co-operative education work terms. The course is year long, however, there are no scheduled classes during the Jan-April term. You will be working on a special project during this term.

Note 4

Options for work terms sometimes include back to back or part-time work term opportunities. This results in a re-structuring of the course and work term rotation schedule.

Seven and half (7.5) units of upper level electives offered outside the Faculty of Education are required for your Recreation and Health Education degree. They must be approved by the Recreation and Health Education Program Coordinator and the EPHE Advising Officer prior to registration.

Note

By special permission, 1.5 of these units may be taken within the Faculty of Education (e.g., 1.5 units may be selected from 300-400 level courses offered by School of Exercise Science, Physical and Health Education or another Faculty of Education department/school (see details below)).

Courses listed below, have been pre-approved as upper level electives by the Recreation and Health Education Program Coordinator and the EPHE Adviser. However, many of the courses offered in these Departments and Schools have specific prerequisites, minimum grade status, or need special permission obtained from Chairs, Directors or Instructors before registration can be completed.  Please refer to the calendar and your registration guide to determine your eligibility.

Other courses not listed may be approved after discussion with the Recreation and Health Education Program Coordinator.
