Apply for admission

When do I apply?
You begin your first year studies at UVic and then transfer into a School of Exercise Science, Physical and Health Education program at the beginning of your second year. At this time, we do not accept students directly out of high school. Information regarding the University of Victoria’s general admission requirements and the application process is available from the University web site at: UVic Undergraduate Admissions.
If you are a high school student interested in completing a School of Exercise Science, Physical and Health Education program you apply for admission to UVic and enter either the Faculty of Humanities, the Faculty of Social Sciences or the Faculty of Science. The faculty to which you are admitted is determined by the secondary school courses that you have completed and does not influence the likelihood of you being accepted into a School of Exercise Science, Physical and Health Education program, although the secondary school courses completed can influence your ability to meet prerequisite requirements associated with courses that must be completed as part of a program.
During your first year at UVic
During your first year of study at UVic you complete the admission prerequisites associated with the program of interest to you. If these courses are selected carefully, they are normally also courses that are required as part of your intended degree program. You would apply by January 31 of your first year for admission the following September. See the How to Apply: Current UVic Students for instructions. If your application is successful you are automatically transferred into the Faculty of Education, which is where the School of Exercise Science, Physical and Health Education's programs are administratively located.
If your application for a School of Exercise Science, Physical and Health Education program is unsuccessful, you may be able to continue to take some courses related to the program of interest to you and re-apply in the next application round.
How to apply
If you are a current UVic student and would like to apply for admission to a program offered by the School of Exercise Science, Physical and Health Education (EPHE) you should complete the following steps:
Step 1
Download and complete an "Application to the School of Exercise Science, Physical and Health Education." This form should be submitted to the Records Services Office, in the University Centre, by the application deadline date: January 31.
Step 2
The Records Services Office will evaluate your application and notify the School if you are eligible to be considered for admission to your application program (i.e., you have completed or will complete all of the program admission prerequisites by the end of April).
Step 3
If you have applied, and are eligible to be considered for admission to either the BEd (Secondary Curriculum - Physical Education) program, the BA (Recreation and Health Education) Cooperative Education program, or the BSc (Kinesiology) Cooperative Education program you will be contacted by email and asked to sign up for an interview. Interview sign-up sheets are posted on the noticeboard that is located next to Room 115 in the McKinnon Building. Interviews will be held on campus in late March or early April.
Step 4
When you sign-up for an interview you will be required to complete an "Interview Confirmation Essay", which is to be submitted several days prior to the interview. You will be interviewed by Faculty from the School and at this interview "How program admission decisions are made" may be explained. That is, how your program admission G.P.A. will be calculated and how other information will be used to determine if you are accepted into a program.
Step 5
The School will notify the Records Services Office in early June of program admission decisions. These decisions cannot be made until after the final grades for the Winter session have been received for both re-registering students and students newly admitted to UVic. The deadline for final grades is May 31.
Step 6
If your program application has been successful you will be authorized to register in courses related to your new program in mid-June. You can also check on-line whether you have been accepted into a program by noting the "Program" and "Faculty" labels on your record for the upcoming Winter Session on "My page." The School will separately notify all applicants by email of the outcome of their application.
Students are not accepted into the School of Exercise Science, Physical and Health Education's programs directly from high school. Typically, you will apply for admission to UVic and during your first year of study at UVic you will complete the admission prerequisites associated with the program of interest to you (NB, If you follow this path, you will be classified as a "UVic student" for purposes of application to an EPHE program. Please refer to the instructions above for how to apply to an EPHE program as a current UVic student).
If, however, you are interested in transferring to an EPHE program from another recognized institution or you have completed other recognized post-secondary studies, and have already completed or have in-progress the admission prerequisites associated with the program of interest to you, you will be classified as a "UVic student". As a new UVic student you will still need to apply for admission using the standard UVic procedures (i.e., both admission to UVic and admission to the specific EPHE program), however, in most cases these two steps can be completed simultaneously. You can find out more more specific information about transferring to UVic with existing courses credits in the "Transfer students" tab on this page.
If you are applying for admission to UVic and would like to apply for admission to a program offered by the School of Exercise Science, Physical and Health Education (EPHE) and you have already completed all of the program prerequisites you should complete the following steps:
Step 1
Complete an "Application for Admission" to the University of Victoria. This form is available from the Admission Services website How to Apply. You complete and send it to the Admissions Office, University Centre, by the deadline: January 31.
Step 2
The Admissions Services Office will evaluate your application and notify the School if you are eligible to be considered for admission to your application program (i.e., you have completed or will complete all of the program admission prerequisites by the end of April).
Step 3
If you have applied, and are eligible to be considered for admission to either the BEd (Secondary Curriculum - Physical Education) program, the BA (Recreation and Health Education) Cooperative Education program, or the BSc (Kinesiology) Cooperative Education program you will be contacted by email to arrange an interview. If you are outside the lower Vancouver Island area and cannot attend the in-person interviews at the end of March or early April, you will be offered an alternate option (either a "paper" interview or a telephone interview). When the interview has been arraned you will be required to complete an "Interview Confirmation Essay" to be submitted several days prior to the interview. Please note that applicants to the Kinesiology Major program are not required to interview.
Step 4
After the interview, you will be sent an email about what happens next and "How program admission decisions are made" which describes how your program admission G.P.A. will be calculated and how other information will be used to determine if you are accepted into a program.
Step 5
The School will notify the Admission Services Office in early June of program admission decisions.
If you are interested in transferring to a UVic program offered in the School of Exercise Science, Physical and Health Education (EPHE) from another recognized institution or you have completed other recognized post-secondary studies you need to apply for admission using the standard UVic procedures (i.e., both admission to UVic and admission to the specific EPHE program).
As part of the admission process a transfer credit evaluation of your previous studies will be undertaken (NB, you will receive a formal statement of this transfer credit evaluation). This will give you a better idea of the courses that you will need to take in order to maximize your chances of being accepted into the program of interest to you, as well as the courses that you will need to take as part of that program. That is, it will identify the courses that you have already completed that can be used for credit in your new program. You may consider submitting an application for admission to UVic to determine the transfer credits they will accept and then make a decision about whether you will continue with your program application based on those transfer credits.
You may be able to manage application to UVic and application for admission to a EPHE program in a single step (i.e., depending on the timing of your applications). If this is not possible, you can take many courses related to an EPHE program without formally being in the program. You should note, however, the longer that it takes you to gain admission to your program the more difficult it becomes to take courses (i.e., particularly EPHE courses) related to the degree because many upper level EPHE courses are restricted to students in a given program, or registration priority is given to students in an EPHE program.
Up to 30 units of a 60 unit degree (i.e., half of a degree) can be completed through approved transfer credits (i.e., courses that are deemed to be equivalent to a UVic course but offered elsewhere). There are, however, also requirements associated with the number of senior courses that must be completed at UVic (NB, an academic adviser can give you more information about these requirements).
Block transfers are not offered, and course substitutions are not possible.
If you already have a bachelor’s degree from UVic or another recognized institution you may be admitted to a second bachelor’s degree program if you meet the following conditions:
- You must meet the admission requirements for the program of the second degree.
- The principal areas of study or academic emphasis of your second degree must be distinct from that of the first degree.
To apply for a second degree you must also meet the following conditions:
- At least 30 units of credit must be completed in addition to the units required for the first degree; normally, 21 of these 30 must be UVic courses at the 300 or 400 level. If the first degree was completed elsewhere, all 30 units must be completed at UVic.
- You must meet all program and graduation requirements for the second degree beyond those required for the first degree.
If you are interested in being admitted to a second bachelor’s degree program you need to apply for admission using the standard UVic procedures (i.e., both admission to UVic and admission to the specific School of Exercise Science, Physical and Health Education (EPHE) program of interest to you). You may be able to manage application to UVic and application for admission to the EPHE program in one step (NB, to do this you would need to have completed all of the second degree program prerequisites in your first degree).
For further information on applying for admission to UVic and to a specific EPHE program refer to the "Transfer students" tab on this page.
BSc Kinesiology (major and cooperative education) programs
Applicants to the BSc Kinesiology major and cooperative education programs who have completed all of the relevant program admission prerequisites are collectively ranked from highest to lowest by grade point average (G.P.A.). The highest ranking applicants are offered places until the quota for the program is filled.
Interviews are conducted with applicants to the BSc Kinesiology cooperative education program only but not the BSc Kinesiology (major) program. These interviews are informational in nature and focus on the purposes and procedures associated with cooperative education. They do not affect the likelihood of acceptance into the program.
Please note that achieving the minimum G.P.A. for application to the program does not ensure acceptance into the program.
BEd Secondary Curriculum - Physical Education program
Applicants to BEd Secondary Curriculum - Physical Education program are awarded weighted scores for G.P.A. and performance at an interview (see below), which are summated and ranked from highest to lowest total score. Cut off points for acceptance are determined each year based on the quota of students admitted to the programs. The weighting for the different application components is as follows:
|
70% Grade Point Average (G.P.A.) + 30% Interview = 100% Total Score
|
BA Recreation and Health Education Co-operative Education program
Applicants for the BA Recreation and Health Education Cooperative Education program who have completed the prerequisites and an interview will be accepted on the basis of their grade point averages (described below) until the quota for the program is filled. The highest ranking applicants are offered places until the quota for the program is filled.
Interviews are conducted with applicants to the BA Recreation and Health Education Cooperative Education program are informational in nature and focus on the purposes and procedures associated with cooperative education. They do not effect the likelihood of acceptance into the program.
Please note that achieving the minimum G.P.A. for the program does not ensure acceptance.
Grade Point Average (G.P.A.)
Your grade point average (G.P.A.) is an important part of how program admission decisions are made. It is based on your most recently completed session of university or college courses and must consist of a minimum of 12 units. If you are currently registered in 12 or more units of university course work, the grade point average you achieve upon completion of these courses will be used for selection.
All requirements for admission must be completed by April 30 and documented by May 31.
If you are currently registered in less than 12 units, the G.P.A. will be determined by using a combination of the G.P.A. you achieve upon completion of the current courses and the G.P.A. from all of the courses in your previous session applied to the number of units required to reach the 12 unit minimum.
Example calculation: Selection G.P.A. = 4.40 (52.75 divided by 12 units)
