Description
This degree is a career credential intended for students who wish to develop a broader understanding of music education and hone their competencies in teaching music education at the elementary, secondary, and post secondary levels.
The degree requirements consist of a minimum of 12 units of coursework, plus 4.5 units of thesis (MA program) or 4.5 units for project proposal and presentation (MEd program). The course work may be taken full time, part time, or over three summers (there are fewer elective choices available in this last option).

Admission requirements
- A recognized baccalaureate degree with at least a B average on the last thirty units of undergraduate work. Music background will be assessed on an individual basis.
- Candidates for the MEd should have a minimum of two years of relevant professional experience.
- Two letters of reference from academic and/or field supervisors (use assessment reports provided in application package).
- A letter of intent, not to exceed two pages in length, in which the following four issues should be addressed:
- relevant background and experience,
- expectations of the program in terms of course content and skills development,
- possible areas of research interest, and
- future personal and professional goals.
- The candidate should provide an up-to-date resume in addition to the above letter.
- Admission is contingent upon the availability of an appropriate supervisor.
Program Structure
Master of
Arts (MA)
A minimum of 12 units of course work, plus 4.5 units thesis (MA program) or 4.5 units for project proposal and presentation (MEd program) is required for degree completion, normally including the following coursework.

* Elective courses are chosen typically from music, music education, and curriculum studies, in consultation with the student's supervisor. Coursework offered by other departments and/or faculties may be included as electives; however, there is no guarantee that space will be available in such courses.
