Language and literacy programs
Description
The University of Victoria offers graduate programs in Language and Literacy leading to the degrees of MEd, MA, and PhD (Educational Studies). These programs are intended for those wishing to further their knowledge of pedagogical issues and practices relating to the teaching of Language and Literacy in elementary and secondary schools, and for those intending to pursue careers in educational research and teaching at the college or university level. Programs are designed to accommodate students' individual interests and objectives, and are undertaken with the guidance and direction of their academic supervisor.
Students may specialize in a variety of areas and at levels from pre-school to adult. Beyond the conceptual core reflected in required course offerings, recent special topic courses, reflecting faculty expertise, have included:

- Assessment in Language and Literacy
- Family Literacy
- Language Education in International Contexts
New! 2013 MEd cohort "21st Century Literacies"
The deadline for submission of applications has been extended to February 18th, 2013
This cohort is a unique mix of on-campus and online coursework, scheduled to accommodate the busy professional lives of teachers. Part of the coursework will be a project relevant to their areas of interest.

Admission requirements
Residence Requirements
The MEd program has no fixed residence requirement. It may be undertaken on a full-time or part-time basis. Some of the courses are available only in the regular winter session. The MA and PhD programs require a residence period of two consecutive terms.

Program Outline
Total Units in Program: 15 units
- EDCI 517 Reading Processes in the School Curriculum: Research and Processes (1.5)
This course offers participants an opportunity to examine and analyze research and models of reading which inform current classroom practice, and examine the processes of reading. - EDCI 536 Language Processes in the School Curriculum: Oracy (1.5)
An examination of processes through which competence in listening and speaking is developed. Course will include analysis of research, methods and materials relevant to oracy. - EDCI 556 Language Processes in the School Curriculum: Writing and Representing (1.5)
An examination of processes through which representational skills and competence in writing are developed. Course will include analysis of research, methods and materials relevant to instruction in writing. - Electives (6)
Chosen in consultation with and the approval of the student's supervisor. Normally includes at least one research design course, one curriculum foundations course and one Language and Literacy course. - EDCI 597 Comprehensive Examination (1.5)

Ph.D.
Program Outline
The PhD program consists of 45 units, of which there is a 30-unit dissertation and 15 units of coursework. The coursework is made up of 7.5 units of core courses and 7.5 units of Specialty and Elective Courses.
Candidacy Examinations will be completed in both the core and specialization areas as set by the Supervisory Committee in conjunction with the department's Graduate Admissions and Programs Committee. The candidacy examinations will be both written and oral.
