Empathy versus hate in a diverse world
Wednesday, Jan. 30, First Peoples House, opening reception beginning at 4 p.m.
The Honourable Mr. Munson had an extensive career in journalism both in Canada and abroad. He served as a television correspondent for CTV reporting on national events in the public and political arena, and was CTV’s Bureau Chief in Beijing from 1987 to 1992 reporting on events such as the Tiananmen Massacre of June 4, 1989. He also served as Bureau Chief and senior correspondent in Halifax, Nova Scotia and London, England.
Mr. Munson was twice nominated for a Gemini Award in recognition of excellence in journalism. His career in journalism led to a successful career in communications which included serving as Director of Communications for Prime Minister Jean Chrétien.
Since being appointed to the Senate in 2003, Mr. Munson has served as Caucus Chair and Whip. He has a special interest in the rights of children and people with disabilities.

Mrs. Olivia Barr
Does diversity breed conformity?

Mrs. Olivia Barr, an alumna of the first University of Victoria graduating class in 1964, is a retired high school English teacher and counsellor. She was the first woman elected as a student council president in a co-ed Canadian university. As a student, she pushed for student representation on the university Senate.
She continued to support the university as a Convocation member of Senate for five terms and through the Alumni Association. As a counsellor, she became known for her work on scholarships for high school students entering university. Since retirement, she has become a passionate outrigger and dragonboat paddler who has competed internationally.
