Community Service Learning

We know how important it is to connect with community. That's why Co-op and Career has partnered with UVic faculties to offer Community Service Learning courses. These full-credit courses provide you with the opportunity to complete four weeks of classroom theory, followed by seven weeks of volunteer community work in an area that you're passionate about.

Course descriptions

The Community Service Learning initiative is just getting started, but here are some of the courses we've offered so far:

  • Social Sciences 300: Working in Community: An interdisciplinary community service learning course combining classroom study of community organizations, civic engagement, and related philosophical and ethical issues; the development of professional competencies needed to work effectively in the community; a practicum consisting of a minimum of 40 hours of voluntary work with a community organization or on a community project; and critical reflection from social science perspectives on the practicum experience.
  • Pacific and Asian Studies 209: Intercultural Service Learning: This 13-week course contains elements of cognitive learning and experiential learning. It will start with four weeks of faculty instruction/workshops on various aspects of  internationalization. Students will then engage in community service learning in an inter-cultural setting, after which they will reflect on the international competencies they gained through the community engagement assignment, and how they can use these competencies in various academic and work integrated learning contexts both locally and internationally. The term will end with a discussion of the international program options available to students and how to prepare for these.
