Co-op student of the year award

About the award

Are you an excellent ambassador for Engineering and Computer Science/Math Co-op and Career and the Faculty of Engineering? If you’ve contributed to your co-op employer, UVic, ENGR Co-op and Career and the community, you could be selected as co-op student of the year.

Co-op students of the year receive a framed certificate, a cheque for $500 and a profile on the Co-op and Career website. The runner-up receives a cheque for $250.

The winning student is also invited to represent UVic provincially for the Association for Co-operative Education in BC/Yukon award and nationally for the Canadian Association for Co-operative Education award.

Nomination process

You can be nominated by your co-op coordinator for this award. Contact your coordinator if you:

  • have completed at least one co-op work term during the year  (Jan–Dec)
  • have a cumulative GPA of at least 5.0
  • received a rating of "very good" to "excellent" from your work term employer on the final competency assessment

You name will be added to the list of applicants and you will be contacted in October with instructions on how to complete the nomination package.

What to submit

Your nomination package should include:

  1. A typewritten personal letter (2 pages maximum, 1 inch margins, 10 pt font minimum) describing how co-op has enhanced your career development, personal development and academic experience. Where possible, please be specific in your examples. Your comments need to be limited to experience from the specific work term and calendar year for which you are being nominated. Please include your signature at the bottom of the letter.
  2. A typewritten letter from your employer (2 pages maximum, 1 inch margins, 10 pt font minimum) describing your responsibilities during the work term; outstanding work achievements that helped the employer; and how you benefited the company/organization. Where possible, the employer should use specific examples.
  3. A copy of your current résumé. Co-op work terms/experience should be clearly identified and noted with work term dates. Extracurricular and community activities, scholarships and awards should also be noted.
  4. nomination form.
  5. portfolio (maximum 2 pages) is also recommended. You may include any items you feel will give the selection committee a better idea of who you are as a person. You may submit photocopies of newspaper and magazine articles, previous employer evaluations, letters of recommendation, published work, awards and citations.  In the portfolio, please do not include items similar to those already submitted in your nomination package.

Please submit your application, comprised of separate Word documents, to your co-op coordinator or to taracoul@uvic.ca by 4:30 pm on November 15, 2013.  For more information, please contact Tara Coulter, placement coordinator, at 250-472-5803.

Selection process

To evaluate your application, the selection committee will use the following criteria:

  1. Job achievement (30 pts)
    Based on the employer evaluation and employer nomination.  Examples are:
    • cost savings
    • process improvements
    • design/development innovations
    • exceeding performance expectations
    • quality enhancement initiatives
  2. Academic achievement (15 pts)
    Based on transcript.
  3. Contribution to co-operative education (15 pts)
    Drawn from your résumé and letter.  Examples are:
      • representation of ENGR Co-op and Career
      • representation of faculty/UVic
      • personal representation
      • identifying or creating opportunities for future students
      • building relationships between employer and UVic
    • Contribution to extracurricular activities (10 pts)
      Drawn from your résumé and letter.  Examples are:
      • student governance
      • university committees
      • university sports/clubs/centres/activities
      • volunteering with Engineering faculty and/or co-op
      • community volunteering
    • Your résumé (10 pts)
      Your résumé should address the criteria in steps 3 and 4, as well as:
      • identify workplace-based learning
      • apply the workplace-based learning into the classroom
      • relationship between work term and career goals
      • relationship between work term and personal development
      • relationship between work term and academic goals
    • Your personal letter (15 pts)
      The letter should demonstrate the criteria in steps 3, 4 and 5.
    • Evaluator assessment and recognition of intangible qualities (5 pts)
