Psychology student volunteers to teach computer literacy

Social Sciences

Inka Foster

Literacy Victoria

For psychology student Inka Foster, volunteering in the community has provided an outlet to help others while brushing up on her organizational and teaching skills. Inka volunteers her time with Literacy Victoria, a local not-for-profit organization that provides adult learners with free tutoring services to increase their literacy and essential skills.

For the past year, Inka has been volunteering her time as a mobile computer lab coordinator. She manages three small teams of volunteers who travel to shelters and community centres around the city each week. The teams provide computer tutorials to adult students who do not regularly have access to a computer. They assist in job searching, résumé building and basic computer skills practice. “An important aspect of my role is providing a safe and comfortable environment for people to learn,” she says.

Inka began volunteering as a way of continuing to support Literacy Victoria after completing a successful co-op work term there.  She enjoys making a difference in the lives of clients. “I believe that increasing computer literacy skills is extremely important in today’s society—computer skills can give a person a great advantage when looking for a job, finding housing and in many other areas,” she says.
