BC Families in Transition finds support through UVic Co-op
Sarah Magee
BC Families in Transition (BCFIT)
As a member of the Greater Victoria Chamber of Commerce, and one of only three non-profit organizations of its kind in North America, BC Families in Transition (BCFIT) works tirelessly to provide services and support systems for the complex issues that arise out of family dynamics. With more than 10,000 people seeking help through BCFIT each year, having the help of UVic co-op student Sarah Magee has made a big difference.

“BCFIT provides support and services of the highest quality for families going through separation or divorce,” says Executive Director Richard Routledge. “The number of people seeking our support is growing every year, and we want to make sure that we provide the best possible service.”
BCFIT hired UVic law student Sarah Magee to do just that. During her co-op work term, Magee has been tasked with researching the outcomes of the programs and services that BCFIT provides its clients in its Legal Support Services department. She works with lawyers, clients, and organizations throughout the city, as well as staff at BCFIT, to understand how to maintain or improve client services.
Her work is helping BCFIT and its clients, but it has also helped Magee, as she’s been able to apply key competencies that students aren't always able to learn in the classroom. “In this position, communication is incredibly important, as well as time management and interview skills,” says Magee. “These are core competencies at UVic, and I’ve been able to practice them while doing good in the community, helping those in need, and giving back.”
Pam Rudy agrees that co-operative education is a benefit to both students and employers. As the Coordinator of the Legal Support Services department, Rudy has supervised three co-op students at BCFIT. "Having someone like Sarah on the team allows us to continue offering our services, and actually improve them at the same time."
The benefits of giving co-op students the opportunity to work in a real-life legal atmosphere can't be understated; BCFIT values its role as a partner in education and is proud to support students as they apply their skills and prepare for a strong future in law.
