What are the Co-op and Career foundations?

Co-op and Career provides resources to help UVic students, alumni, staff and faculty strengthen their professional skills, navigate their careers and learn how to excel in the working world. These resources make up the Co-op and Career foundations.

How can the foundations help you?

The foundations are made up of three “kits” of career resources: the journey kit, the competency kit, and the tool kit. We’ve designed these resources to help your students (and you!) brush up on old skills, learn new ones, and navigate the working world with confidence.

Why does the foundations matter?

  • For faculty: You can use the resource kits as teaching tools in your classes, or direct students to use them if they’re looking to fine-tune their professional skills or explore career options.
  • For staff: Looking for career support? Our resource kits aren’t just for students! Ask a Co-op and Career office how the kits can help you.
  • For employers: Students who use our resource kits learn professionalism and polish, and the skills they’ll develop prepare them to contribute to your workplace.

What are the three kits?

The journey kit

Co-op

The journey kit helps students (and you!) plan and navigate their overall career path. This kit includes resources related to career research, labour market data, goal setting, self-assessment and networking.

The competency kit

Co-op

The competency kit helps students (and you!) develop and practice ten “core competencies” that can make a real impact in the workplace. These competencies include:

  • personal management
  • communication
  • managing information
  • research and analysis
  • project and task management
  • teamwork
  • commitment to quality
  • professional behaviour
  • social responsibility
  • continuous learning

We also encourage Co-op and Career users to develop competencies specifically related to their area of study, as well as professional competencies valued by their professional organizations.

The tool kit

Co-op

The tool kit helps students (and you!) build basic career-related tools like résumés, cover letters, interview skills, and more. Students use the resources in this kit whenever they apply for jobs.
