Biochemistry and Microbiology Co-op

Biochemistry and Microbiology Co-op

What our students can do

BikeOur students focus in diverse fields, including medicine, public health, veterinary science, agriculture, horticulture, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, fisheries and environmental protection. All are trained in lab research; many are experienced out in the field.

Junior biochemistry and microbiology students are trained in aseptic techniques, bacterial characterization, and some food, water and medical microbiology. They can analyze food, water and environmental samples, maintain quality control of pharmaceutical compounds and monitor industrial fermentation processes. Senior students can contribute to research projects in cellular and molecular biology, advanced biochemistry, recombinant DNA technology, immunology, molecular genetics and proteomics.

What our students can do

bikeBiology Co-op students specialize in a range of disciplines, including marine biology, fisheries, forestry, resource management, ecotourism, pest management, environmental monitoring, wildlife assessment and tracking, botany, microbiology, genetics and medical research. 

In the lab, they learn logic and report-writing skills, basic plant and animal taxonomy, microscopy and aseptic techniques, cellular biology and biochemistry. On the job, students can apply their skills in field and lab research, monitoring and management, project planning and implementation, data analysis, literature review, report preparation, public speaking and teaching.

Every year, Business Co-op and Career awards two Business Co-op Employer of the Year awards: one to a Lower Mainland employer and one to an employer in Victoria. The UVic Business Co-op Employer of the Year is selected based on the following criteria:

  • overall support and involvement with the UVic Business Co-op and Career Centre;
  • the number of co-op students and UVic graduates hired into career positions;
  • involvement in our programs (such as the Interview Clinic, the Career Fair, etc.);
  • participation with the student community (acting as a guest speaker, mentor, or providing information sessions).

Chemistry Co-op

Chemistry Co-op

What our students can do

bikeChemistry Co-op students put their skills to work in environmental monitoring, quality control and research and development. Our employers include industrial and pharmaceutical companies, analytical companies and government.

Our junior students are trained in qualitative and quantitative analysis and instrumentation, including AA, IR, UV/Vis, NMR and MS. They can analyze soil, sediment and tissue samples; carry out quality control; maintain instruments; and develop and verify methods. Third and fourth year students study advanced organic, inorganic, analytical and theoretical/physical chemistry. They receive full laboratory training, conduct project-oriented experiments, and focus in advanced fields, including supramolecules, natural products, photochemistry, laser spectroscopy, material science and computational chemistry.

The Master of Dispute Resolution (MADR) program trains students to assess diverse conflicts and to work with others to develop practical strategies and interventions for public policy and governance.

Our students put their skills to work in government and in not-for-profit, international development, human rights and consulting organizations. They can help develop public policy; build mechanisms and processes to peacefully resolve public disputes; perform qualitative and quantitative research; prepare policy papers; design, administer and analyze surveys; and plan, implement and evaluate programs and projects.

Earth and Ocean Sciences (EOS) Co-op

What our students can do

bikeAt EOS Co-op, we’re proud of our cross-disciplinary EOS program. Our students study igneous, metamorphic, sedimentary and resource geology; paleobiology; earth and atmospheric sciences; global tectonics; hydrogeology; and geochemistry, as well as chemistry, math and physics. They’re also trained in a ten-day field school class and learn logic and report-writing skills.

Our co-op students work for diverse employers, including the mining and oil industries, environmental consulting firms and government agencies. They can apply their skills in many areas, including field geography, resource-based geology, water quality, oceanography and atmospheric science.

bikeAll engineering students take part in UVic Co-op. Our students work in business, industry, government and not-for-profit organizations across Canada and around the globe. On their co-op work terms, our engineering students have:

  • developed Client Protection software (Microsoft)
  • improved equipment for children with special needs (CanAssist)
  • performed structural design of marine technology (Robert Allan Ltd)
  • created designs for the Plasma Arc Project (DND Fleet Maintenance)
  • advised companies on their lighting needs (BC Hydro)

Computer science students are trained in software engineering, web programming, business applications, network and systems administration, website design and technical support. Our math students study cryptography, data analysis, statistical analysis, discrete mathematics and more. On the job, computer science and math students have:

  • fixed bugs on Blackberry devices (Research In Motion)
  • digitized kayak shells (Ocean River Sports)
  • added functionality to software programs (Electronic Arts)
  • applied cryptography (Communications Security Establishment)
  • researched and analyzed health care trends (Statistics Canada)

Exercise Science, Physical and Health Education (EPHE) Co-op

What our students can do

bikeEPHE Co-op students put their skills to work in health clinics, fitness and rehabilitation centres, parks and recreation, government ministries, youth camps and community associations around the world. EPHE Co-op is divided into two programs:

  • Kinesiology Co-op students study healthy movement and contribute to the training, development and health maintenance of children, adults, seniors and athletes. They promote employee wellness; assess physical fitness and wellbeing; prescribe exercise and healthy lifestyles; design environments to promote health; and help advance the understanding of human performance.
  • Recreation and Health Education Co-op is mandatory for all RHEd students. Students study and practice community recreation and social service administration. They’re trained to plan, implement, assess and supervise recreation, sport, fitness and health policies and programs that support social change. They can think critically, analyze information, manage human resources and develop administrative policy.

What our students can do

bikeHIS Co-op students study database design, statistics, networks and telecommunications, health care software design, epidemiology, hospital information systems, information resource management, medical methodology, healthcare ethics and project management.

They’re trained to:

  • set up and upgrade hardware and software
  • extract, interpret and report database information
  • build, implement and maintain databases and websites
  • interface information systems
  • provide IT training and helpdesk support to clinical staff
  • establish service agreements with clients and vendors

On their co-op work terms, our HIS students have:

  • revised the database and completed the training manual for the Field Epidemiology Training Program (Health Canada)
  • rolled out and educated users on the Tracemaster ECG Management System (Mt. Sinai Hospital)
  • converted a database from Paradox to Access 2000, and remotely installed and tested the Downtime Patient Index (Vancouver Island Health Authority)
  • developed an information management strategy for CIO (Centre for Addiction and Mental Health)

What our students can do

bikeHFPW co-op students are passionate about communications, creativity and culture. Our students work for newspapers, book and magazine publishers, media, government, museums, galleries, cultural societies, advocacy groups, not-for-profit organizations, tourism and more.

Our professional writing students specialize in journalism and photojournalism, publishing, technical and creative writing and corporate communications. They’re also trained in electronic media, including desktop publishing and website design. Our arts students are skilled in research, writing, project management, languages and critical thinking. Our visual arts students focus in graphic design and creative arts.

On their co-op work terms, our students can:

  • write news stories, profiles and features for publication
  • perform and produce theatre
  • handle marketing, communications, public relations and advertising
  • plan and coordinate events, fundraise and supervise volunteers
  • research, formulating and evaluating policy

What our students can do

bikeOur co-op employers include high-tech businesses, scientific research organizations, crown corporations, and government and university research labs. All our students have a strong base in mathematics, computer programming and numerical methods.

Physics students study mechanics; electricity and magnetism; optics; atomic, nuclear, particle and quantum physics; fluid mechanics; thermodynamics; geophysics; and medical, mathematical and solid state physics.

Astronomy students are trained in solar, galactic and extragalactic astronomy; radio astronomy; astrophysics; and observational astronomy.

How to hire a co-op student

How to hire a co-op student
  1. Submit your job description to our online co-op job board, or contact us if you’d like us to help you write it.
  2. Review the cover letters and résumés of student applicants and choose the most suitable candidates to interview. We’ll set up an interview schedule that works for you. You can interview students at your office, on campus, on the phone or through Skype.
  3. Tell us which candidate you would like to hire. We’ll contact the student and let you know if he or she accepts the job offer. We ask that you do not make the offer directly to the student. Students will have 24 hours to accept or decline the offer. If the student accepts the job offer, we'll then ask you to send the student a letter to formalize the details.

You can advertise one job to students from many different program areas, but you'll connect have a single point of contact to make thing simple. Your personal co-op coordinator will be happy to help you write your job posting, and you can use our system to easily screen résumés and shortlist candidates for interviews.

By becoming a co-op employer, you’re agreeing to follow the ethical guidelines set by the Canadian Association for Co-operative Education. According to these guidelines, you will:

  • comply with all provincial and federal legislation regarding freedom of information, human rights, and employment
  • provide accurate job posting information, including job description, salary and location
  • respect UVic's schedule of job postings, interview arrangements and job offers, and follow our Co-operative Education policies and procedures
  • provide reasonable notice to candidates to be interviewed and of interview cancellations
  • respect the confidentiality of the placement process with candidates before, during and after an interview
  • avoid asking about a candidate's assessment of another candidate
  • make offers in accordance with UVic Co-op Program procedures
  • avoid multiple job offers unless prepared to hire multiple candidates
  • honour offers of employment, including salary
  • confirm all job offers in writing
  • not translate a co-op assignment into a full-time position, thereby encouraging a student to postpone academic commitments

When to
hire

Co-op students are available year-round. Work terms generally begin in

  • January
  • May
  • September

but you can post job descriptions anytime. If your co-op placement doesn't fit the September, January or May start dates, we’d be happy to discuss alternatives with you.

Work terms usually last for four or eight months (parallel to academic terms) so that students can alternate their work experience with their studies. Sometimes students and employers decide to extend a co-op work term for an additional four months. Where possible, students on an eight-month placement should be given increased responsibility and salary.

work term

As a co-op employer, you're a valued partner in education. Here are a few tips to help you and your co-op student make the most out of the co-op work term.

1) Complete the Competency Assessment

UVic Co-op uses a competency based model that asks co-op students and co-op employers to assess student learning in relation to 10 core competencies. Employers should follow this schedule as they assess student progress on the work term:

  • FIRST WEEK: Your co-op student will complete the work term goals and learning objectives form (part 1 of the Competency Assessment). Once your co-op students submits this, you'll receive an email from UVic Co-op and Career with a link to the completed form. Set up a meeting to review the form and discuss his or her learning objectives. Encourage your student to use the resources in the competency kit as he or she completes the form.
  • END OF THE SECOND MONTH: Your student will fill out the mid-term assessment form (part 2 of the Competency Assessment. You'll receive an email once your student submits this, and will be asked to complete the employer section of the form (there will be a link to this form in the email). You can use the Description of 10 Core Competencies document as a resource.
  • SECOND OR THIRD MONTH: Your student's co-op office will arrange a work site visit. During the visit, the co-op staff member will ask you and your student to discuss the student's learning and competency development, and will refer to part 2 of the Competency Assessment.
  • END OF THE WORK TERM: Your student will fill out the final assessment form (part 3 of the Competency Assessment). You'll receive an email once your student submits this, and will be asked to complete the employer section of the form (there will be a link to this form in the mail).

After you've hired a student, it’s a good idea to provide an orientation session to help them understand more about your organization. It's a great time to:

  • develop work term goals with the student
  • explain your organizational structure and orient your student to the workplace
  • ask your student about his or her learning objectives
  • outline your expectations

Orientation could include a tour of your workplace, an introduction to your colleagues, and an overview of how your organization works. You might also want to provide the student with an introduction to the projects and tasks that they’ll be completing over the work term.  Here’s an orientation checklist to get you started.

Don’t forget to be clear about expected workplace behaviour and professionalism.  This is also a good time to outline any confidentiality issues. Make sure your student employees know to follow your organization's confidentiality policies and understand that the information they work with, including the results of any research they do, is your property.

Over the course of the work term, you’ll provide supervision, either personally or by assigning a mentor to the student. Every situation is different, so the level of supervision depends on the co-op job as well as the student. Your co-op coordinator can help you determine the appropriate level of supervision you’ll provide.

At the first sign of any unusual situation (behaviour problems, medical emergencies, etc.), you should contact your co-op coordinator, who will work with you to resolve the problem. If you're considering firing a co-op student, we ask that you discuss your concerns with your co-op coordinator.

Almost all co-op students are required to write a work term report for each work term. Some co-op programs encourage students to start thinking about a topic early in the work term and to discuss the report topic with you. Work term reports are often about a project or learning opportunity that the student found valuable.

Report requirements are different for each program. Students can find specific information on their student co-op program pages.

Most reports are due 15 to 30 days after the work term has ended. The report is evaluated by the co-op coordinator or by a UVic faculty member.

If the report contains confidential information, you may mark the student’s work term report instead. Some programs have work term evaluation forms, which must be completed one month after the work term ends. For sample work term reports, please contact your co-op program office.

At the end of the work term, please complete the confidential Evaluation of the Co-op Program form, as well as the Evaluation of the hiring process form. These forms take about 3 minutes to complete and will help us improve our program for the future.

Co-op costs

Co-op and Career’s recruitment services are completely free. 

Under the terms of a collective agreement or the Employment Standards Act, you’ll also provide benefits: four per cent vacation pay or time off in lieu during the student's work term. For more information, please look over BC's Employment Standards Act.

Average salaries

As a co-op employer, you’ll set your student employee’s salary based on the student’s skills, your organization’s resources and industry standards.

Co-op salaries depend on many factors, including your previous work experience and the job itself. The average monthly undergraduate co-op student salary is more than $2,750. The average graduate student salary is more than $3,500. Under the terms of a collective agreement or the Employment Standards Act, you’ll also provide benefits: four per cent vacation pay or time off in lieu during the student's work term.

Relocation costs

Students usually expect to pay for their own housing and relocation. You may choose to make your job postings more competitive by offering incentives, like providing subsidized housing or paying travel costs after the work term.
