Helping students excel in your workplace
What skills do you value most in your employees? What does it take to be successful in your workplace? It’s different for every organization, but some core ingredients are the same. The Co-op and Career foundations teach UVic students and alumni how to strengthen their professional skills and make a difference in your workplace.
How can the foundations help you?
The foundations are made up of three resource kits to help students plan their career development: the journey kit, the competency kit, and the tool kit. Students who use the three kits are better equipped to contribute to your workplace. You can encourage your student employees to use these kits to truly excel.
The journey kit
The journey kit helps students plan and navigate their overall career path. It includes resources related to career research, labour market data, goal setting, self-assessment and networking.
The competency kit
The competency kit helps students develop and practice ten “core competencies” that can make a real impact in your workplace. These competencies include:
- personal management
- communication
- managing information
- research and analysis
- project and task management
- teamwork
- commitment to quality
- professional behaviour
- social responsibility
- continuous learning
We also encourage students to develop program-specific competencies related to their area of study, as well as professional competencies valued by professional organizations.
The tool kit
The tool kit helps students build career-related tools like résumés, cover letters, interview skills, and more. Students use the resources in this kit whenever they apply for jobs.
