How to hire an international student
To hire an international student, you’ll follow the same hiring process as you would to hire other students. Just specify in your job description that you’re seeking an international student.
- Post your job description on our online job board. If you’d like help writing your job description, just contact your Career Services office and we’d be happy to help.
- Review the cover letters and résumés of the students who apply. You can choose to receive these cover letters and résumés directly, or let us know if you’d like our office to collect them and forward them to you.
- Select the most suitable applicants and schedule your interviews. If you’re posting a full-time opportunity for a new graduate, contact us and we can schedule you an on-campus interview for free.
- Choose the candidate you’d like to hire.

What documents do international students need?
They’ll need a valid work permit and a Social Insurance Number in order to work off campus. Co-op and Career can help students secure these documents.
What international students are available?
- International UVic students who are not part of a co-op program: Not all international students take part in co-op. Many of these students look for full-time, part-time or casual work experience or volunteer opportunities with Canadian employers.
- International co-op students studying at UVic: Many international students, including those studying at UVic and those on co-op exchanges from international universities, seek co-op work terms as part of their degree programs. If you’re a co-op employer, you can hire international co-op students for four-month work terms or longer.
Can you hire international students for long-term employment?
Several government programs allow you to hire international students after they graduate.
- The Post-Graduate Work Permit Program lets university graduates work in Canada for up to three years after graduation.
- The British Columbia Provincial Nominee Program lets you nominate an international employee to be able to work in Canada while the immigration process is in full swing.
- Canadian Experience Class can help students become permanent residents of Canada.
