Fitness sampler

Description:

Join instructors with Vikes Recreation for a sampler of two different ways to move your body, challenge your mind and uplift your spirit. Each fitness sample will be approximately 20 minutes in length. First, you will dance and celebrate life with this all-levels sampler where you'll explore a rhythm and movement from Guinea, West Africa. West African dance is fun, high energy and suitable for both beginners and more experienced dancers. Second, you will sample a brief introduction to the mind and body aspects of yoga and pilates.  This session will teach you to breathe deeper, connect your mind and body, activate your core, and strengthen and stretch your muscles.  Please bring a yoga mat if you have one.

Facilitators:

Laura Carleton is a dancer and musician with Moondance Dynamic Arts School and UVic Vikes Recreation. When she's not working with the UVic Student Awards and Financial Aid office, she's happily learning, performing and sharing this joyful art of movement.

Clarise Lim is a Master is a Master of Science Kinesiology student at UVic and has been teaching fitness classes for 15 years. She currently teaches at Pearkes Recreation and UVic Recreation's Weekend Warrior program.

Second, using bodyweight movements you will sample an express bootcamp workout that will strengthen and tone your entire body.  This high-intensity format will get your heart pumping and give you exercises to take with you wherever you go.

Meditation

Description:

In this introductory workshop we will learn a basic meditation form and explore the benefits and challenges of establishing a regular meditation practice. We will examine how meditation relates to stress reduction and promotes a non-reactive way of responding to the tensions and busy-ness of the workplace and family life.  We will note how meditation nurtures increased mindfulness and self-awareness and how it connects in with our capacity to simply be and rest in Spirit. Finally, we will have a short meditation-sit, and have opportunity for questions.

Presenter:

Henri Lock is the United Church Chaplain at the University of Victoria and has served in that position since 1992 through Multifaith Services. He holds master's degrees in both theology and behavioural science and is a long-time student of integral spirituality. His role is to offer resources to the UVic community - students, staff and faculty - for spiritual learning, practice, community and service. His particular interest is the practice of meditation, drawing from Christian, Buddhist and non-religious contemplative wisdom traditions. He hosts a drop-in group meditation session for staff every Wednesday from 12:15 to 12:50 pm at the Interfaith Chapel.

Protecting your personal privacy in a digital world

Description:

This workshop will provide you with some strategies for protecting your personal privacy at home and at work.

Presenter:

Bill Trott has been the University of Victoria privacy officer since December 2008 and is currently the Manager, Privacy, Access and Policy. Previously Bill worked as the Director, Integration for eHealth Privacy and Legislation, Ministry of Health, British Columbia from April 2007 to December 2008. He was the acting director and a portfolio officer in the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of British Columbia from 1994 to 2007. He graduated from the Faculty of Law, University of Victoria and was adjunct professor in the Faculty of Law at UBC. His publications include "Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy" in Annual Review of Law and Practice, The Continuing Legal Education Society of B.C. and a chapter in A Legal Handbook for the Helping Professional, Second and Third Editions.

Description:

Do you find yourself riding on a roller coaster and wonder who is in charge of steering the ride?  Have the dips and turns of life surprised you with regard to balancing work, family and play? Has the ride around some of the corners of life taken your breath away? This session will combine workplace wellness research, personal storytelling and a dash of humour to discover how we can be fit but not well, busy but bored, and why many of us wonder if there is such a thing as work-life balance. Participants will be encouraged to take a step back, reflect on personal and professional goals and celebrate the next dip or turn that always continues as we attempt to live a healthy and well life.

Presenter:

Dr. Lara Lauzon is an assistant professor at the University of Victoria in the School of Exercise Science, Physical and Health Education and her research area includes human wellness and personal potential. She is also a consultant specializing in workplace wellness, women and wellness and leadership; has won numerous awards in teaching, health and wellness, and fitness; has worked for not-for-profit, municipal, provincial and private health and fitness agencies; and co-produced and hosted an internationally syndicated health and fitness show called Body Moves for seven years. Dedicated and passionate about active living, Lara demonstrates a belief that healthy individuals help to make a healthy community!
